How Culture Impacts Social Media
March 2025
ABSTRACT
Social media usage has rapidly increased in the past few years, and it continues to trend upward. Currently, over 5 billion people are actively using social media globally. Because of this, it's important to assess how culture impacts social media usage and its implications for social media design. Studies indicate that cultural factors strongly influence things like communication and privacy expectations, which indicates a need for culturally adaptive design guidelines. Future research should continue to explore the best way to implement a cross-cultural social media platform.

AI uses for Mental Health & Therapy
November 2024
ABSTRACT
The United States is currently experiencing a mental health crisis due to the lack of awareness and accessibility. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) could be a promising solution to help alleviate these issues and fill the gaps in the mental health care field. Early studies indicate that the existing applications of this technology have been successful for patients and practitioners, and interest in the technology is rapidly increasing. However, there are also still a lot of concerns surrounding this technology, especially in regard to ethics and privacy. Future research should continue to explore the implications of this technology and identify the best way to transition mental health care to incorporate generative AI technology.

Examining Gender Preferences for Aesthetics & UI
November 2023
ABSTRACT
Aesthetics is an integral part of design and human-computer interaction (HCI), as it has been found to increase overall user satisfaction and enjoyment. In order to better understand aesthetic preferences as a whole, it is beneficial to first examine them through a more specific lens like gender. Research shows that there are gender-specific aesthetic preferences, and they tend to reflect stereotypical ideas of femininity and masculinity. However, other design aspects, such as symmetry, appeal to both genders. Additionally, designs reflecting strong masculine and feminine ideals were found to elicit the most positive response. Overall, further examination of the current research on gender-specific aesthetic preferences and how this can be implemented in design guidelines could allow for a more inclusive approach to design and HCI.
